Excerpt 7

Alone with Amy in her dimly lit room, I shut off the mechanism that rocked her bed. I wanted to lie down next to her, but because of all the splints and pads and wires that were in the way, I couldn’t. I leaned down, and, resting my cheek on hers, held her hand. I stood by her side late into the evening; kissing her, touching her face, stroking her hair, until I got so tired I thought I’d collapse.

Before I went home for the night, I put my lips to Amy’s ear, and holding her hand tight, I whispered, “I won’t let you down, Amy. I promise. I love you, and I won’t let you down.”
