Excerpt 6

“You mean to tell me…” I said, searching Dr. Parker’s face, but suddenly it was gone, and the whole room started to pulse and fall away, like I was being sucked backward; everything looking like a reflection in the side mirror of a car – the two doctors, the furniture, the walls – all seeming small, far away, and covered by a thin layer of fog, “…that I’ve been agonizing for nights about what I was going to tell Amy when she woke up…how I was going to explain it to her…You mean to tell me that she’s not even going to know?” My voice sounded delayed, echoing back to me as if I were standing in a cave.
“That’s right,” Dr. Parker said, patting my hand. “She’ll never know you broke your promise to her.”
