Excerpt 5

“What’s on your mind?” Dr. Miller asked, as we sat down face to face.
“I don’t believe in life at all cost,” I said.
“Neither do I,” Dr. Miller replied without hesitation.
That was all it took. The fear and despair that for ten days had been building up inside of me came gushing out as if a dam had just broken, flooding the room, crushing my lungs under its enormous weight. “I feel like I’m letting her down,” I said, as I burst into tears; squeezing the words out in a voice barely louder than a whisper.
Dr. Miller’s jaw dropped. After all, he knew I’d been right there by Amy’s side, all day every day, from the moment our ordeal began. “What do you mean?” he asked.
“Amy and I had a deal,” I said, swallowing hard.
